MIAMI Series
Sea and Sky
The Miami series began in the midst of a brutal New Jersey winter. In am attempt to bring some color into my life, I went to NYC and bought yards of blue and green fabric. I was transported into the world of taffeta, chiffon, organza—their names alluring.
I begin by adhering fabric to the paper, canvas or cigar box with which I’m working. The fabric is used to create large areas of flat color. It is cut randomly and roughly to create edges and frays that are especially expressive. I paint over the fabric to modulate the color and build up a rich, textural surface. I can imagine creating this image very large—sides of a building.
The subject of sea and sky present endless challenges to an artist. Clouds, wind and tides create light and motion that are constantly shifting. The greens and turquoises emit a warmth and clarity that fills one with a sense of wellbeing. Ever since the palettes of Matisse and Diebenkorn, I have sought a means to express my passion for these color combinations.
